All operations at Dubai International (DXB) will be transferred to Al Maktoum International (AMI) over the next few years. A new Dh128-billion passenger terminal at the AMI announced Sunday will scale up passenger capacity to 260 million annually and “fully absorb” DXB’s operations in 10 years.

The announcement marks phase two of the airport’s expansion. DXB will continue to serve as the primary hub “meeting the needs of 100 million plus guests over the next few years as phase two of DWC takes shape," the operator of both airports said in a statement. Dubai-based Emirates Airline called the airport its "future home" as it shared photos of the AMI. Set to be five times the size of DXB, the airport will span 70 square-km once fully operational. It will have five parallel runways and five passenger terminals housing more than 400 aircraft gates.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) is undergoing a major transformation, with operations gradually shifting to Al Maktoum International Airport (AMI) over the next decade. A significant milestone in this transition was the announcement of a new Dh128-billion passenger terminal at AMI, set to enhance its capacity to a staggering 260 million passengers annually. This development is part of phase two of AMI's expansion, aimed at fully integrating DXB's operations within the next ten years.

Emirates Airline, a prominent Dubai-based carrier, has already expressed its anticipation for this shift, referring to AMI as its "future home" and sharing images of the airport. AMI's grand scale is evident, planned to be five times larger than DXB, covering an expansive 70 square kilometers upon completion. The airport's infrastructure will boast five parallel runways and five passenger terminals, accommodating over 400 aircraft gates to facilitate seamless operations and cater to the growing demands of air travel. DXB will continue to play a crucial role in the interim, serving as the primary hub to meet the needs of over 100 million passengers until phase two of AMI's development materializes.
